Maverick Athlete Breaking Barriers

Major Taylor Museum –  Worcester, MA

Exhibition Design | Community History | Flexible Gallery System

Major Taylor broke world records and racial barriers to become one of the most accomplished cyclists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Designed in his hometown of Worcester, this exhibition honors his legacy while supporting the museum’s role as an active civic space. TRACE Design Group created a flexible gallery system using a lightweight scrim and pulley infrastructure that allows the space to shift seamlessly between immersive storytelling and open community use. Graphic panels and suspended media provide continuity, while the exhibition’s anchor—Taylor’s original training bicycle—grounds the experience. An interactive cycling component invites visitors to race against Taylor, connecting physical achievement to enduring themes of resilience and possibility.
